“The Magic REALLY is in the Hole” at the country’s coolest doughnut shop – Voodoo Doughnuts. This zany Portland sweet shop came highly recommended by a local and since nothing cheers me up on a rainy day like jamming as much sugar in my own hole as possible, we had to swing by after dinner one day.
When we arrived, there was a line to the door and an overwhelming list of options on the wall each with hilariously descriptive, but not exacting names like “Triple Chocolate Penetration”, “The Loop” and “Grape Ape”. Since we weren’t too sure what we wanted – besides the famous Bacon Maple Bar – we asked the cashier for some guidance on three more.
The Bacon Maple Bar has been featured on a couple food sites and television shows and is a must eat at least once – which is probably also the MOST times you should eat it. The BMB is a raised yeast doughnut with maple frosting that is topped with 2 crispy strips of bacon.
The friendly-ish clerk suggested we try the Captain my Captain, a raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting topped with a heaping pile of Cap’n Crunch cereal, and the Old Dirty Bastard, the same raised yeast doughnut with chocolate frosting, topped with Oreo’s and peanut butter. He also made sure we got their signature “Voodoo Doll,” chocolate topped, filled with raspberry jelly and topped with a white cream effigy.
Maybe it was due to our post-New Orleans diet, but these doughnuts tasted even sweeter than normal. After eating most of these doughnuts in less than an hour, and an hour later we passed out in the hotel. When we woke up, we could hardly remember what happened.
