Billed as the “remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico”, the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is just West of Collinsville, Illinois.
According to archeologists, the ancient city contained on these six square miles was a thriving metropolis from about A.D. 700 to 1400. As many as 20,000 people lived in this tight community. More than 120 mounds were built in the city and acted as burial and ritualistic sites, but also as fortification platforms for sentries and platforms for building government structures.
The society however gradually declined beginning in the 1200s and by 1400, the site had been TOTALLY abandoned. Where these peoples went is yet to be determined and adds to the mystery of the mounds.
